Biography of artist Sergei Hovsepyan
Artist Sergei Hovsepian began to exhibit his works at the USSR, republican and international exhibitions since 1972. Hovsepian’s creations are distinguished by deep understanding of traditions, nevertheless, he follows his own vision of artistic exploration of the world and life. His works reflect the significant range of topics and are relevant to the problems of our times. The painter’s world perception carries traits of a national character which is reflected in his thematic and artistic interests, but these national traits are not manifested in his works through external signs, omens, and attributes, but above all they are embedded in the perception of his consciousness, his vision of the world.
Since the early years of his artistic career Hovsepian showed surprising variety of themes and subjects in his paintings. His desire to tell about the time and its problems guided him in his search of new vivid forms of expression. This was manifested in one of the most distinguished qualities of the young artist – his deep and serious consideration of the relationship between the form and content. Each theme dictates its own artistic technique; the content is prompted by certain definite plastic principles. Larger thematic paintings of Hovsepian are characterized by spiritual and analytical study of cognitive reality.
He implements a variety of means – from conventional to documentaries – in order to enhance the impact of his figurative paintings. The artist often brings into the paintings footages of documentary material, film and photo chronicles. However, the documentary material loses its original essence and becomes an object of art. Tactfully using this material, Hovsepian produces the desired effect: a comparison of the two systems appeals to the psychological perception of the world of the modern man. This refers to the paintings “At the photo exhibition,” The Artist and the Time,” “The Race of the World,” ” Veto.” Connecting events separated by time, Hovsepian clarifies the essence of his artistic position through their juxtaposition. Hovsepian’s works are diverse in their themes and genres. The artist continuously challenges and tests himself , trying to perfect his style and themes.
